Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans
Essence Festival of Culture is an annual Fourth of July weekend celebration of Black culture and music held in New Orleans, Louisiana, founded in 1995 to mark Essence magazine's 25th anniversary. What began as a planned one-time concert drew 142,000 attendees and became a permanent fixture, now centered at Caesars Superdome and the convention center.
In 1995, Essence magazine turned 25, and to mark the milestone, organizers planned a one-time music festival in New Orleans built around Black culture, community, and empowerment.
