The story

Newport Folk Festival in Newport

Newport Folk Festival is an annual folk music festival held each July at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Founded in 1959 by promoter George Wein alongside Pete Seeger, Albert Grossman, Theodore Bikel, and Oscar Brand, it launched Joan Baez's career and became known as the site of Bob Dylan's controversial 1965 electric performance. Revived in 1985 after a hiatus, it now sells out annually under the nonprofit Newport Festivals Foundation.

The Newport Folk Festival began in 1959 as an offshoot of the Newport Jazz Festival, itself founded by promoter George Wein.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Newport Folk is less a concert series than a piece of music history: its 1959 debut introduced eighteen-year-old Joan Baez to the world, and its 1965 edition became the stage for Bob Dylan's amplified, band-backed set, an event now shorthanded as him going electric, which split the folk crowd and signaled his turn toward rock

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival helped fuse folk music with the civil rights movement, staging communal renditions of We Shall Overcome with Dylan, Baez, Pete Seeger, and the Freedom Singers

03

The city starts moving

After a long hiatus, George Wein revived it in 1985 at Fort Adams State Park, a coastal fort, and it has since become known for closely guarded secret sets and surprise sit-ins by touring artists
