The story

Orange City Tulip Festival in Orange City

Orange City Tulip Festival is a three-day Dutch-heritage celebration in downtown Orange City, held the third weekend of May since 1936. Its 2026 edition marks the 85th annual festival, featuring twice-daily parades, a street-scrubbing ritual, klompen wooden-shoe dancing, and a Straatfeest street festival with a historic Dutch costume fashion show.

Orange City Tulip Festival began in 1936, one year after neighboring Pella launched its own Tulip Time, part of a broader wave of Dutch-heritage festivals that Iowa's Dutch immigrant settlements organized in the mid-1930s to keep their cultural identity visible during the Great Depression.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Like Pella's Tulip Time to the east, Orange City's festival centers on a street-scrubbing ritual, men and boys throwing water on the street ahead of women and girls scrubbing it clean before the Tulip Queen and her Court pass by, a custom visitors are invited to join rather than only watch

02

The mystery stays covered

Klompen dancing performed by children and adults in family-heirloom Dutch costumes, some passed down across generations, connects the modern festival to genuine folk tradition

03

The city starts moving

Running continuously since 1936 in a town of roughly 6,000 people, the festival draws between 50,000 and 100,000 visitors over three days, an extraordinary ratio that transforms the entire town for the occasion
