The story

Pendleton Round-Up in Pendleton

The Pendleton Round-Up is a major PRCA rodeo held each September in eastern Oregon, running since 1910, featuring bronc riding and steer wrestling alongside the largest annual Native American tipi encampment in North America and the Happy Canyon pageant staged each evening in its own arena.

The Pendleton Round-Up began in 1910 as, in the organizers' own words, a frontier exhibition of picturesque pastimes, Indian and military spectacle, cowboy racing and bronco busting for the championship of the Northwest.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few American rodeos combine world-class PRCA competition with the depth of Native American participation found at Pendleton

02

The mystery stays covered

Since the first Round-Up in 1910, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla and other Northwest tribes have set up a tipi village of more than 300 lodges beside the arena, making it the largest annual Indian encampment in North America

03

The city starts moving

Alongside the rodeo, the companion Happy Canyon pageant, staged in its own outdoor arena and conceived by Round-Up co-founder Roy Raley, performs a three-part narrative covering the region's Native peoples, the Oregon Trail emigrants who followed, and Pendleton's own frontier era

04

The water draws everyone in

The event survived a 1940 stadium fire and a wartime suspension to remain one of the top-ranked rodeos on the circuit
