Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in Portsmouth
The Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival is a free, volunteer-run weekend of sea chanteys, ballads, and maritime folk music held each late September across five historic waterfront venues in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Started more than 25 years ago by residents Jeff Warner and Peter Contrastano, the nonprofit festival preserves and presents the city's seafaring musical heritage.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire built its early identity as a working seaport, and the songs sailors sang while hauling lines, raising sails, and passing long ocean hours never entirely disappeared from the city's cultural memory.
