The story

Princeton Festival in Princeton

The Princeton Festival is a performing arts company based in Princeton, New Jersey, presenting three weeks of opera, musical theater, chamber music, jazz, dance, and drama each June at venues across town. Launched in 2004 by founding artistic director Richard Tang Yuk, it has grown from five events into as many as fifty, alternating traditional opera classics with rarely staged modern works and earning repeated recognition as the state's top opera producer.

Its cultural institution backing and Princeton setting make it a strong arts row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival built its reputation by pairing standard opera repertoire with pieces central New Jersey audiences would otherwise never see staged, including John Adams's Nixon in China, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Handel's Ariodante, and Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress

02

The mystery stays covered

its 2009 production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream drew praise from The New York Times for its imaginative staging

03

The city starts moving

It performs across a rotating set of Princeton venues, including Richardson Auditorium, the University Chapel, Miller Chapel, and Taplin Auditorium, and since 2015 has maintained its own Princeton Festival Baroque Orchestra for period-informed programming

04

The water draws everyone in

Though many performances take place on Princeton University property, the festival is an independent nonprofit, not a university program, and partners with regional ensembles such as VOICES Chorale and the Bucks County Choral Society
