Richmond Marathon in Richmond
The Richmond Marathon, established in 1978, is one of the 20 largest marathons in the United States and a top Boston Marathon qualifier, run each November through Richmond's historic downtown and along the James River. Known as 'America's Friendliest Marathon,' the course starts at 1st and Broad Street and finishes on Brown's Island at the Canal Walk.
The Richmond Marathon was established in 1978, and its inaugural race drew a respectable field for the era, 1,183 marathon finishers alongside additional participants in companion 8K and half marathon events, with David Ruggles winning the men's race and Bobbie Allen the women's.
