The story

Santa Fe Opera Festival Season in Santa Fe

The Santa Fe Opera presents a summer festival season of five operas in repertory at its open-air Crosby Theatre, seven miles north of the city. Founded in 1956 by conductor John Crosby, the company opened its first season on July 3, 1957, with Madama Butterfly and has since staged 45 American premieres and 19 world premieres, becoming internationally known both for new opera commissions and for training young singers and technicians through its apprentice programs.

In 1956, a young New York-based conductor named John Crosby set out to build something that barely existed in American opera at the time: a summer festival company where singers could rehearse new roles at length, take real creative risks, and learn by doing rather than by watching from the back of a European house, which was, at the time, often the only way young American singers gained real stage experience.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The theatre itself is part of the experience: rebuilt in 1998 to a design by architect James Polshek, the Crosby Theatre seats 2,128 plus 106 standees under a roof that shelters the stage while leaving the sides open to the sky, so performances unfold against the actual sunset and stars over the high desert

02

The mystery stays covered

John Crosby served as general director until 2000, the longest tenure in American opera history, and his Apprentice Singer Program, launched in the company's very first season, has trained more than 2,000 young singers

03

The city starts moving

a parallel Technical Apprentice Program, added in 1965, remains the only such program at a US opera house with a budget over 15 million dollars

04

The water draws everyone in

Roughly 1,000 aspiring singers and 600 technicians apply each year for a limited number of apprentice spots
