The story

Philadelphia Folk Festival in Schwenksville

One of the longest-running folk festivals in the United States, the Philadelphia Folk Festival gathers over 35,000 visitors and nearly 7,000 campers at Old Pool Farm outside Philadelphia each year, produced almost entirely by volunteers of the nonprofit Philadelphia Folksong Society since its 1962 founding.

Its history and camping/music culture make it a core Pennsylvania music row.

02

The mystery stays covered

Goldstein, along with George Britton, Bob Seigel, David Baskin, Esther Halpern and Tossi Aaron, the festival's inaugural edition at Wilson Farm near Paoli drew 2,500 attendees against an expected 2,000, an early signal that Philadelphia's appetite for folk music exceeded what its founders had planned for

03

The city starts moving

The four-night, three-day event now spans genres well beyond traditional folk, World and Fusion, Celtic, Singer-Songwriter, Folk Rock, Country, Klezmer, Blues, Bluegrass, Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, Storytelling and Dance among them, and the fact that it remains staffed almost entirely by volunteers and run by a nonprofit song society, rather than a commercial promoter, has kept it rooted in the folk tradition's community ethos across more than sixty years
