The story

Gem and Jam Festival in Tucson

Gem and Jam Festival began in 2005 as an after-hours gathering for visitors to Tucson's renowned Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase, created by founder Toby White when he noticed vendors closing early with nothing else happening in town. Held each February at the Pima County Fairgrounds, the festival now combines electronic and jam-band music, psychedelic visual art, and gem and mineral vendors across three days.

Every February, Tucson hosts one of the world's largest gem and mineral trade shows, drawing dealers and collectors from across the globe for daytime buying and selling.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Gem and Jam Festival occupies an unusual cultural niche: it exists specifically to give nightlife and music programming to the world-renowned Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase, an event otherwise built around daytime buying and selling

02

The mystery stays covered

Founder Toby White started it in 2005 as a single-day afterparty after friends in the gem trade complained that vendors packed up early with nothing to do afterward, and the festival grew from that practical gap into a standalone three-day event

03

The city starts moving

After pausing during the 2011-2012 recession, it returned in 2013 and has since relocated to the 640-acre Pima County Fairgrounds, giving it room for multiple stages of electronic and jam-band music alongside psychedelic and visual art installations
