The story

Marine Corps Marathon in Washington

The Marine Corps Marathon is a 26.2-mile race through Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia, run every fall since 1976 by the US Marine Corps. What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathons pair the scale of a major-city race with an entirely uniformed volunteer and support structure: Marines staff aid stations, hand out finisher medals, and organize a mile-20 checkpoint on the 14th Street Bridge nicknamed Beat the Bridge, after which stragglers are swept from the course

02

The mystery stays covered

The route passes the Lincoln Memorial, the Tidal Basin, the Capitol, and the National Mall before finishing at the Marine Corps War Memorial

03

The city starts moving

With no qualifying standard, no lottery favoritism beyond a general entry cap, and no cash prizes for winners, it has grown into the third-largest marathon in the country and the largest in the world that awards no prize money
