The story

People's Festival Tribute to Bob Marley in Wilmington

People's Festival 4Peace: Tribute to Bob Marley has honored the reggae icon's personal ties to Wilmington every summer since 1995, when his mother, Cedella Booker, asked local friends to organize a concert in his memory. Held at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park, the festival features reggae, world-music, and gospel acts, a drum circle, international food vendors, and arts and crafts booths.

Before Bob Marley became one of the most recognized musicians in the world, he spent stretches of the late 1960s and early 1970s in Wilmington, Delaware, working day-shift jobs at a DuPont plant and a Chrysler plant between recording sessions in Jamaica.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival rests on a genuine personal connection rather than a general reggae-music theme: Bob Marley lived and worked in Wilmington in the late 1960s and early 1970s, taking day-shift jobs at DuPont and Chrysler plants between recording sessions, and his mother, Cedella Booker, later settled permanently in the city

02

The mystery stays covered

Founder Godfrey Ibis Pitts, a close friend of Marley's since meeting him around 1968, staged the first tribute concert at Frawley Stadium with more than twenty bands after Booker's direct request

03

The city starts moving

The festival has never skipped a year since, reaching its thirtieth annual edition in 2024, and its programming, a noon drum circle, a Healing Garden, and a Peace Pavilion, deliberately echoes Marley's own themes of peace and unity rather than functioning as a standard concert lineup
