Sharq Taronalari International Music Festival in Samarkand
Sharq Taronalari, or Melodies of the Orient, is a UNESCO-listed international music festival held every two years in Registan Square, the monumental heart of ancient Samarkand. Vocalists and musicians from dozens of countries perform against the illuminated madrasas of one of the Silk Road's most recognizable landmarks, making it one of Central Asia's largest cultural gatherings.
Sharq Taronalari, meaning Melodies of the Orient, grew out of a specific moment in post-Soviet Uzbekistan's cultural self-definition.
