The story

Yam and Magic Festival in Olal/North Ambrym

Held in Olal village on North Ambrym, the Yam and Magic Festival celebrates the yam harvest on an island long associated with kastom magic. Villagers mark the season with sand drawing, tam tam drumming, conch shell calls, storytelling, and displays of Ambrym black magic, alongside bamboo flute music, wood and lava stone carving, and weaving.

North Ambrym is one of the few places in Vanuatu where pre-Christian kastom religion, art, and social structure survived colonization and missionary pressure largely intact, and Olal village's Yam and Magic Festival is a public expression of that survival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ambrym is known across Vanuatu as the island of magic, and this festival is one of the clearest public windows into that reputation, with practitioners demonstrating kastom magic alongside sand drawing, a form of storytelling art recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival is built around the yam, a staple crop and a marker of status in Ambrym society, so the harvest celebration doubles as a showcase of skills tied to rank and ancestry: carving in wood and volcanic lava stone, weaving, and tam tam log-drum performance

03

The city starts moving

Fanla village, one of the festival's anchor communities, is considered among the most intact kastom villages left in Vanuatu, preserving pre-Christian religious and artistic practice largely intact
