Festival de San Juan de Chuao in Chuao

The Fiesta de San Juan Bautista de Chuao is a more than 300-year-old Afro-Venezuelan celebration in the cacao-growing coastal village of Chuao, Aragua state, held around June 23 to 24. It features an amanecer tamborero (drummer's dawn), processions with drum-driven dancing, and colorful costumes recalling butterflies that arrive with the rainy season.

Chuao is one of Venezuela's most isolated and most storied villages, tucked into a narrow valley on the Aragua coast and reachable only by boat across the Caribbean or by a mountain trail through cacao groves that have made the settlement famous among chocolate makers worldwide.
