Festival de San Juan de Naiguata in Naiguata

The Fiesta de San Juan Bautista de Naiguata is a more than 350-year-old Afro-descendant celebration in the coastal Vargas state parish of Naiguata, running from noon on June 24 through dawn on June 25 and beyond. Its distinctive drum pattern, the repique de Naiguata, was declared Cultural Heritage of Vargas state in 2005 alongside the wider San Juan observance.

Along the Vargas coast just north of Caracas, the parish of Naiguata has spent more than three centuries, by residents' own reckoning, building one of Venezuela's most distinctive expressions of Afro-descendant religious devotion: its own repique, or drum pattern, performed each year in honor of Saint John the Baptist.
